Boskruin Weathers Competitive Table Tennis
When 53 kids from all over Gauteng get together to play table tennis under one roof, one can be assured that the day ahead will not be boring. Such was the Gauteng Central Junior Open Tournament that was held on the 24th of April under the comforting roof of the Boskruin Community Centre, the home of table tennis in Gauteng Central.
Although the traditional Gauteng autumn weather delivered unseasonably cold weather, inside the venue the atmosphere was warm and hotly competitive, and the ever smiling caterer delivered hot coffee and tasty toasted snacks on cue.
Young Athletes from areas such as Attridgeville, Soweto and Tuks Sport (HPC) arrived in their droves to battle it out for the various medals on offer. And they did not disappoint. Local suburbs such as Florida, Ferndale and Boskruin also delivered highly motivated youngsters to tackle the much vaunted high profile athletes from the north.
The finals were attractive spectacles that had the adult spectators in awe – the local videographer was overheard saying that he was so enthralled that he totally forgot that he was watching youngster and not senior players.
In the girl’s division, upsets were common with the seeds losing to their lesser competitors during the group stages. This pattern continued through the knockout stages to the final battle.
As for the boys, the Mathole brothers from Attridgeville once again proved that they are a force to be reckoned with.
A great day thanks to all the athletes, coaches, parents, minders and spectators.
A vote of appreciation goes to the City of JHB, Boskruin Centre Staff, Lotto, BFTTC, Willem Krull Catering, SATTB, Vivian, Margie, Filipe, Gavin, Kosta and Rolf.
