The GC Junior Open: A Looping Success

By Filipe

The turnout at the GCTTA Junior Open on the 6th September was astounding and encouraging. With an entry of 70 athletes, the game play was exciting and thrilling. The venue and weather played along in providing a healthy environment for the showcase-of-talent on display.

The participation of 6 resident Sport Academy kids added to the excitement of the day.

The tournament, which was played in an age-staggered format, delivered much in the way of surprises by the lower ranked players. The top seeds managed to support their allocated seeding by playing through to the finals.

The highlight of the day was the display of talent by the Atridgeville boys who, by concession, were allowed to play in the 17/U age group, where they forced kids outside their age groups, to play beyond their staid capabilities.

In the girls 12/U and 14/U division, it was a joy to witness unheard-off athletes knocking the socks off established players. A testament to the success of ‘capacity building’ projects and regular junior coaching programmes.

Another highlight stemmed from the numerous requests received from parents for coaching facilities. Here they were pointed to the various coaches in attendance for further discussion and information.

During the prize giving processes, “When is the next tournament” was heard reverberating around the hall.

An encouraging expression indeed!
